North Macedonia and the UK Organize Expert Workshop on Cyber-Security

Skopje, July 11th, 2019

Today, North Macedonia and the United Kingdom hold a one-day expert workshop on cyber-security in Skopje, organized as part of their collaborative relations. The underlying aim of this worshop is to establish specific initiatives in support of the process of capacity building in the field of cyber-security, as well as to enhance cooperation between both countries.

The event was opened by Minister of Information Society and Administration, Damjan Manchevski, and by Her Majesty's Ambassador to the Republic of North Macedonia, Rachel Galloway.

During the workshop, the Delegation of North Macedonia underlined strategic goals and activities implemented at national level with a view to strengthen cyber-security capacities. The Delegation of the Government of the United Kingdom shared best practices and some specific measures to support North Macedonia in implementation of priority activities anticipated under the Cyber-Security Action Plan 2018 - 2022.

With regards thereto, Minister Manchevski noted: "North Macedonia makes active efforts to promote cyber-security capacities at national level. By setting a strategic vision and practical activities for implementation of defined actions, we continue to walk the path towards building an open, safer and secure cyber-space.

Recognizing the role of all stakeholders in cyber-space and including them in the Strategy implementation process, North Macedonia underlines commitments for transparency by means of cooperation with all sectors of society. Our will and preparedness to build capacities was supported by strong cooperation with international partners. Thus, today we have the immense pleasure to host this expert workshop, whereby experts from the United Kingdom discuss best practices and selflessly share their experiences and expertise.

The focus of the national Cyber-Security Strategy and Action Plan 2018 - 2022 lies in adopting strategic decisions, conducting strategies at operational level, as well as identifying and protecting critical information infrastructure. These are the very two domains wherein the United Kindgdom is renowned for its experience and knowledge and I am hopeful that today's event will result in specific measures to support North Macedonia in these areas", said Minister Manchevski.

“This event marks another important step in our ever-increasing bilateral cooperation, in an area which is current, complex and constantly evolving. North Macedonia, along with its neighbours, is at the forefront of Euro-Atlantic security, both geographically and in the digital space. As North Macedonia approaches NATO accession, the importance of strengthening this frontline defence is becoming more significant by the day, and will continue to do so for many years to come. Building effective Cyber capability is a key part of preparedness for NATO membership, and the UK stands by to support you in this preparation. Today, experts from across the UK Government will work with you to share best practices and identify challenges, opportunities and next steps on your path to a more secure Cyber environment. Cyber security is not an area that should operate in isolation. It is complementary to a wider effort to protect Governments and Citizens from a series of hybrid threats. It takes a coordinated, joined up, whole of Government approach to effectively tackle these threats. We are committed to working with you to ensure a safer and more secure online space throughout the region, the European continent and globally”, concluded Ambassador Galloway.
